Miller-Remick provided professional engineering services for the replacement and modernization of the steam distribution, condensate return, and associated piping and plumbing systems throughout Oval 1 and Oval 2 at the Coatesville VAMC. The project included redesign and upgrades to steam and condensate infrastructure serving multiple campus buildings and mechanical service rooms, along with water line surveying, piping, and plumbing assessments and improvements to ensure system-wide reliability and code compliance. As part of the system’s downsizing effort, selected buildings were removed from the updated network. Major project elements included:

• Replacement of condensate pumps, receivers, steam main isolation valves, steam-to-hot-water heat exchangers, hydronic heating pumps, domestic hot-water generation equipment, pressure-reducing valves, and temperature-control systems.
• Installation of new steam and condensate services, condensate return components, thermal pipe insulation, and temporary condensate-return systems to maintain operations during phased construction.
• Evaluation and design of new steam and condensate service connections, crossties between Oval 1 and Oval 2, and additional service feeds to support campus-wide utility distribution.
• Removal of obsolete steam, condensate, plumbing, and underground utility piping throughout the campus.
• Investigation and mitigation of underground moisture intrusion associated with remnants of the former steam distribution system.
• Decentralization of select buildings from the failing steam loop through conversion to natural gas heating systems.
• Incorporation of elevated access and service platforms to improve maintenance access and operational safety.
• Water line surveying, piping, and plumbing assessments and improvements to ensure system-wide reliability and code compliance.
